The Importance of Regular Movement Breaks and Avoiding Sedentary Behaviour

Over a third of the adult population of this world gets sufficient physical activity. Are you aware of the profound impact that prolonged sitting can have on your health? Let's delve into the science behind it. Recent research findings gathered from multiple studies paints a clear picture of the risks associated with extended periods of sedentary behaviour.

  1. Increased Risk of Chronic Diseases: Studies, such as those published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, the Korean Journal of Family Medicine, and the American Journal of Epidemiology, highlight a significant correlation between sedentary behaviour and the development of chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions. Sedentary lifestyles, in fact, lead to a higher risk of mortality. This underscores the importance of breaking up long periods of sitting to mitigate these risks.
  2. Musculoskeletal Issues: Research published in the Journal of Lifestyle Medicine suggests that prolonged sitting can contribute to musculoskeletal problems such as back pain, neck stiffness, and reduced flexibility. Regular movement breaks can help alleviate these issues by promoting blood flow and reducing muscle tension.
  3. Cognitive Decline: According to findings from an article in Frontiers in Neuroscience, extended periods of sedentary behaviour are associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline and cognitive impairment. Taking regular breaks to move and stretch can enhance cognitive performance and maintain mental acuity throughout the day.

Incorporating movement breaks into your daily routine isn't just a luxury—it's a necessity for maintaining your overall health and well-being. By taking short breaks at least every 30 to 60 minutes to stretch, walk, or engage in light exercise, you can mitigate the negative effects of prolonged sitting and boost both your physical and mental health. In the research article found in the Journal of Applied Physiology, they had their subjects do 1  minute of half squats every 20 minutes.

Prioritize your health by integrating movement breaks into your workday. Your body and mind will thank you for it! If you are struggling to move without pain or work out how to incorporate sufficient movement into your day, please don't hesitate to get in touch with Gympie's only Physiotherapy and Holistic Lifestyle Counselling centre.
